Its hard staying sober...Does it get easier??

Posted in Group:

Hello,
This is my first time seeking support other than my family...
Jan 4, 2010 was the day I decided to quit drinking...and today I'm still sober. But it hasn't got any easier and I'm afraid of relapsing. I started drinking when i was about 14(now 36) and never really stopped until 2004, had back surgery and stopped for 4 months...Then I continued until New Years 2010. I didnt realize I had a drinking problem until I stopped. Lately, when I'm around people, family and friends(acquaintances) who are drinking I get depressed, because I feel left out. I sometimes say to myself, maybe I should just drink one or two and then I'll stop. It'll be easy. But I'm afraid I won't be able to stop and the 2 years would be a waste..It's hard staying sober and wondering if anyone has advice to get me past this difficult disease.
Thanks,
Mike

You took a huge step by reaching out here. I also might suggest you give an AA meeting a try. For me getting and staying sober has meant keeping people in my life who suffer from the same disease as me and who also want to stay sober. It does get easier but you need to limit your exposure to the situations that make you think about drinking. For me that meant ending a lot of friendships that were centered around drinking, not easy but it was necessary. We are never "cured" of alcoholism and having said that it does get easier with the proper supports and changes in place in your life.

Yes, it DOES get MUCH easier.

I struggled the first few years.
The first year was the toughest.

Now I am 12 plus years sober and VERY RARELY think about drinking.

It does take a few 24's to get into that comfort zone.

Avoid People, Places, and Things UNTIL you are OK with it.

For me, it took about 5 years before I could comfortably be near drinking. I still avoid being around it, but during an event...it doesn't bother me in the slightest now.

Oh lord people say months and years and I am looking for days... I am drinking while I am posting I am so pathetic but I really do want to find help and stop drinking. I have prayed for a magic pill, which does not exist... I need my husband to just hold me tight and tell me to "stop drinking" which he does regularly and then I go out and drink again. I am so disgusting.... May God Please give my husband peace of mind and soul... MY husband is so tormented by my behavior....
